Call me: Shakes
What year did you start playing roller derby?: 2016
What year did you join MARD?: 2016
Why did you get involved in roller derby?: To be honest to prove a point. I had a doctor who didn't have much faith in my recovery from an illness. I always loved to skate but wasn't able to for a long long time due to health issues. While watching "Whip It" for the millionth time in the hospital, my Dr. said "again" I said "yes and watch I'm going to do that one day". He told me basically don't count on it and that I'd never get to a place to do something even close to roller derby. So fast forward about a year I ditched the Dr and found a better one who helped me get to a safe place where I could at least skate. Once I found happiness I found it easier to be healthier and stay on track with physical therapy. Although I still have some issues with my legs I have gotten to a place where I can play and be happy. MARD is my happy place.
What skates do you use?: Bont
How has roller derby changed your life?: Roller derby has kept me active and in a healthier place. It also helped me get to know people I wouldn't have met in my everyday life. Roller derby has taught me no matter your shape or size every BODY has a purpose on the track. There is no such thing as I am too short, I am too skinny, I am too big, or too tall. I have also learned if you set a goal and fail a million times its OK because at least you tried and the only failure is not trying at all. Roller derby has given me much needed me time and me time is very important especially if you are a mom. It's a stress reliever in a positive way with lots of great company. MARD is more like a second family, they support you on and off the track.
Why did you choose your derby name?: No Mom they do not call me Shakes because my leg shakes when I skate!!!, But it is kinda funny to think so. My derby name was something my first coach(Banshee) would say to us when we went really fast but I didn't know how to stop that well it just so happened that one of my teammates who I became really close with was also called something from the same movie so it was a no brainer we had to keep it alive. Talladega Nights!!! Although I did have some on the back burner they just didn't seem to fit me as well as Shake'N Bake. I chose #508 because that's my city's original area code and I love my Secret City aka New Bedford. #locallove
Day job?: 911 Operator/Dispatcher
What is your favorite part of roller derby?: Being able to work at my own pace and not be worried about catching up or comparing myself to anyone else. When you do great your teammates recognize it and always are there to give you a high five. When your having an off day your teammates are there to make you laugh and smile. When you accomplish a goal no matter how big or small it may be everyone celebrates and is happy for you. This is a place where I can find true authentic people from all walks of life enjoy the same thing that I do. My absolute favorite part is the feeling of being free nothing else matters for just that short time that I am skating.
Do you have any bout day routines or superstitions?: Routine: Drink Lots of water, Eat a good protein filled meal, Listen to Beyonce on repeat all the way to the game. Superstitions: MAKEUP!!!! Always have to have red lipstick not just any red lipstick My lucky shade is Best Red by Milani Cosmetics. This is the power shade of red for me.
