Amandaconda
Call me: Bunz
What year did you start playing roller derby?: 2016
What year did you join MARD?: 2016
Why did you get involved in roller derby?: Because my mom told me I shouldn't/couldn't. So I did.
What skates do you use?: Reidell Blue Streaks with Arius plates
How has roller derby changed your life?: I am definitely more confident and stronger both physically and mentally. I am less afraid of stepping out of my comfort zone. I am incredibly shy so showing up to orientation by myself, not knowing a soul, was one of the scariest (but best) things I've ever done. I also could barely stand up on skates and didn't know what a jammer was.
Why did you choose your derby name?: Because Amandaconda don't want none unless you got Bunz hun.
Day job?: Occupational Therapist
What is your favorite part of roller derby?: I'm not sure I can pick a favorite. I love the inclusivity and body positivity. Every body serves a specific purpose, whether tall, short, big, or small. I've definitely learned to appreciate mine for what it can do, and for what I make it do when it tries to protest. I'm also not the new kid anymore, so I get to watch and help newer skaters develop skills and learn the game. It's the best feeling ever watching your teammates have great moments on the track during a game and I burst with pride and excitement for them. I have a long way to go in becoming a better player myself, and I know I have all the support in the world from my coaches and league mates. Everyone genuinely wants everyone else to succeed and be great and I can't say that for any other sport that I've played. I've met lots of people that I wouldn't have met otherwise and have made lifelong friends. And we get to hit each other, so that's kinda cool.
Do you have any bout day routines or superstitions?: I eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before every game. I spend more time than I'd like to in the bathroom. I've been playing with game day make up to make my resting bitch face more frightening. And I have a nervous freak out about 10 minutes before our warm ups start.
Final thoughts?: I hate snakes.
